Underrepresentation of blacks and minority groups in clinical trials for prescription drugs, covid vaccine, and treatments for commonly known illnesses . Must include a proposed solution to the issue
According to the National Library of Medicine, adverse drug reaction deaths have a clear association with urbanization and demographics. Therefore, the federal government should enact a bill to diversify clinical trials that all states are required to follow. Medical organizations, hospitals, and drug developers need to be required to seek out participants that come from minority communities when conducting clinical trials. Some organizations have begun this journey; however, to have more of an impactful change in this area of inequitable health, there must be a policy in place that orders other health organizations to follow suit. Hosea 4:6 in the Bible says that, “ My people perish for a lack of knowledge.” Unfortunately, many black and Hispanic people have been taking prescriptions for decades without knowing that the adverse reaction to drugs that they experience may be diminishing their health instead of improving their overall condition. The effectiveness of standard treatments have been largely misconstrued. Therefore, we must first matriculate this information about the underrepresentation of minority groups in clinical trials throughout impoverished communities in America and then on forward to the upper echelon of the government. A grass campaign would be essential to beginning this disbursement of information, and we must reach people where they are. Additionally, incentives should be given to minority groups in order to increase their participation in clinical trials in return this would help establish a healthy relationship between health organizations and minorities. Even though we are created equally, different ethnicities are physiologically different, and must be clinically treated as such. A lack of diversity in clinical trials when prescription drugs are created has become a matter of life and death. The representation of blacks and hispanics in clinical trials for newly developed medicine and medical products is far less than that of whites and caucasion groups. As a result, most drugs are created and clinically tested for people of European descent. This is highly alarming because the effects of medication can vary from one ethnic group to the next. According to the British Medical Journal, “some races are more susceptible to adverse drug reactions during treatment with cardiovascular drugs.” However, this increased susceptibility to adverse drug reaction is not only found in cardiovascular drugs, it is also found in many other medications used to treat a plethora of diagnoses. For example, Advair is a medicine used to treat Asthma, and in small print on the label it reads, “If you are African American and you take this you have an eightfold risk of dying.” Furthermore, the rate of deaths amongst black children to asthma attacks is ten times higher than that of whites, and most scientists say that the reasons are genetic; however it may very well be the chronic effect of adverse reactions to drugs used to treat Asthma that are causing long term and short term issues.. The F.D.A. reports that racial and ethnic minorities are underrepresented in clinical trials and may respond differently to the drugs that are approved. Combatting this issue will be highly effective in reducing the gap of inequitable health treatment between blacks and white. Most of the the health issues that are deemed in minorities, may have originated in a lack of diversity in clinical trials for drugs used to treat those disorders. Currently, the world is facing one of the biggest pandemics since the black plague. Whereas many minority groups are disportionately affected by the outbreak. Automatically, this should bring forth a question. “Is the vaccine and treatment for covid less effective for minority groups due to the lack of diversity in clinical trials?” Unfortunately, the answer to this question is yes. Additionally, this brings forth another question in relation to the question above. “Why is there a lack of diversity in clinical trials?” Historical and ongoing racism in health care today contribute to the ill health of all minority groups, especially black people.
