Avoid simply saying you agree or you like what your peer said. Instead, if you agree or you if like what your peer has written, focus your response on explaining why. We are all influenced by the world around us, creating unique, individual experiences that affect our personalities and perspectives. In the same sense, an author is influenced by their past when they write. Their race, gender, class, and socioeconomic status all have a unique impact on their writing. Therefore, the more you know about the author, the better you can understand the messages and meanings behind their body of work. An author’s perspective is defined as the way an author looks at a topic or idea. Sometimes, an author uses particular words, phrases, and even dialects to inform the reader of their feelings and opinions about a topic. They may also have characters say or do things within a text that implies their point of view. There are three ways an author presents their perspective: first person (using ‘I’, ‘me’, ‘my’, ‘we’), second person (using ‘you), and third person (using ‘they’, ‘he’, or ‘she’). Depending on the type of text and the type of message the author wants to convey determines which perspective the author uses. An author’s purpose is considered as their intent or reason for writing. An author can choose to persuade, inform, or entertain readers. An author may make attempts to convince the reader to accept a particular point of view. This style of writing includes factual information as well as personal opinions about a topic. This allows one to trace an idea, or a social pattern and how that changes or evolves over time. Exploring different cultures, times, and places that we may not be familiar with as well as reading about many different things helps us understand other people’s perspectives and experiences as well as our own culture. My research topic proposal will be based on the impact of women in American literature. I want to be able to answer how women influenced society through their writings whether that includes religious beliefs, gender norms, or racial issues. I chose this topic because of the pattern I have noticed in literature in which women are writing about current issues happening in their lifetimes and how their literature has impacted society. An example is Anne Bradstreet and how she incorporates the importance of her Puritan faith in her works which is inspiring to those who practice her faith. I also believe that women have a significant impact when it comes to issues that happen in society and this is supported by the popularity of their works. An example is Harriet Beecher Stowe and how her novel focusing on the issues of slavery was widely recognized as one of the many causes behind the civil war. Similar to Stowe, Zora Neale Hurston will be included in my essay as well as her impact has been seen through her writings about issues relating to black women. Kate Chopin and Sandra Cisneros are an example of women who brought the truth behind gender norms and how marriage affects the well-being of females. This research will be beneficial to help me understand the importance that women hold in American literature and society.
