SNHU Translating Knowledge from An Evaluation Report Discussion

Instructors and professors often comment that they learn much more about their subject matter when they begin to teach it. When they try to explain the topic to someone else they begin to connect concepts in new ways. They anticipate questions that students might ask, consider different viewpoints, and think more critically.

For this Discussion, take the perspective of someone who is instructing his or her colleagues and sharing your understanding of research methods and program evaluation.

To prepare for the Discussion, select an evaluation report from this week’s resources. Consider how you would present the information to a group of colleagues.

By Day 3

Post an analysis of how you would present the results of the evaluation to a group of social work colleagues. Identify the background information that you think they would need and the key message of your presentation. Explain the strategies that you might use to meet your colleagues’ interests and goals. Identify questions that your colleagues might have and what their reactions might be.

By Day 5

Respond to at least two colleagues by offering critiques of their analyses. Identify strengths in their analyses and strategies for presenting evaluation results to others. Identify ways your colleagues might improve their presentations. Identify potential needs or questions of the audience that they may not have considered. Provide an additional strategy for overcoming the obstacles or challenges in communicating the content of the evaluation reports.

Colleague 1: Katherine

• Post an analysis of how you would present the results of the evaluation to a group of social work colleagues.

The School Success Program: Improving Maltreated Children’s Academic and School-related Outcomes reviews the connection of childhood maltreatment and school performance and how an Ohio school system developed a program to combat those issues. According to Mallett, the school system in Ohio provided individual tutoring and mentoring through teachers for around 615 maltreated youth in the school system. Progress was assessed over a years’ time and data was collected that displayed evidence of a 48 to 58% increase in core subjects (Mallett, 2012).

• Identify the background information that you think they would need and the key message of your presentation.

Background information that would be essential to this presentation is that “child protective services agencies nationwide confirmed that 903,000 children as maltreated in 2007” which is 10 percent more than 1990 (Mallett, p 13). Also, that children who are deemed to be maltreated “enter school one-half year behind on academic performance” than those of non-maltreated children (Mallett, p 14).

The key message of this presentation would be the correlation between childhood maltreatment and poor performance in school.

• Explain the strategies that you might use to meet your colleagues’ interests and goals.

The strengths that I may use when meeting my colleagues’ interest and goals is the amount of knowledge and information I have of the desired program and topic. Building on these attributes would help with my deliverance of this information.

• Identify questions that your colleagues might have and what their reactions might be.

Some questions that my colleagues might have been “what is the program design,” and “how is the program going to be implemented?” Other questions may be where volunteers are going to come from, for example, the teachers that are needed for the program’s success. Also, when would the program take place because it couldn’t be during school hours.

I could see overall reactions being positive but also a concern of how it would actually be pulled off and be successful.

Colleague 2: Emily

Hello Class and Colleagues,  

According to Keeping families and children in mind, an evaluation of a web-based workforce, mental illness is a family affair where studies indicate that a parent who has a mental illness is two times likely for a child to have a mental illness also (Rupert, & Foster et al. 2011).  The study discusses that 21 to 23 percent of all families where one individual has a mental illness (Rupert & Foster et al. 2011). Mental illness comes in all shapes, sizes, it does not discriminate. Mental illness can create friction in families. Often children do not know about their parent’s mental illness because it’s not talked about in families. This could pose complicated for individuals when they try to explain their medical history.  

Post an analysis of how you would present the results of the evaluation to a group of social work colleagues. 

27 people participated in the study, 20 were females, and 7 were males (Rupert & Foster 2011). With this study, using a pre- test posttest design for comparison group could be effective when creating a method to teach with. According to Social Work Evaluation, the groups build on the design (Dudley 2020). Since there are 20 females and 7 males, the groups are not created equal. This means that the groups could be used as comparison in results since they are different in numbers.  

Presenting this discussion to a group of social work colleagues, I would focus on the differences between the two groups in the study and how they appear to be uneven numbers. Another thing I would focus on is presenting the information to members in a way all cultures and diverse groups of social workers could understand.  

Identify the background information that you think they would need and the key message of your presentation. 

Some important background information that needs to be discussed is information regarding the type of program that will being used. The purpose of the program and how the program is facilitated by two females (Rupert & Foster et al. 2011). This is a key factor because it means that the way the content is displayed could be different than if it was a male instructor. Some other information would be statistics of the questionnaires and comparison data.  

Explain the strategies that you might use to meet your colleagues’ interests and goals. 

Using things to peak my colleague’s goals and interests could be their own personal survey that is taken prior to the meeting. Using something of this nature and reviewing it before materials are presented could be helpful. This way, you would be able to pique the interest of individuals or at least have an idea of things that interest them.  

Identify questions that your colleagues might have and what their reactions might be. 

Colleague’s might ask how the design or surveys fair to the data collection is if the numbers are excessively drastic and have a huge gap of male vs. Female participants. Another question could be how to get stigma lessened for the adult population to be able to identify concerning family matters.
