The French composer Hector Berlioz (1803-1869) was one of the great inventors in the romantic period. One of his most innovative works is the astonishing Symphonie fantastique (Fantastic Symphony), a five-movement program symphony which reflects his unrequited passion for the actress Harriet Smithson.
