Assignment 1

Websites rich in nutrition and health information:

Chiphealth.com

https://chiphealth.com/

I knew about this website before hand because I am familiar with the CHIP lifestyle and their programs from my church so I chose this website and got to learn more about it since I have never actually visited it before.

The Who: The website and program was created by DR. Hans Diehl, DrHsc, MPH from the Lifestyle Medicine Institute.

The When: It read Copyright 2019 telling me it is up to date and I also know it is up to date since I know about some local programs that will be starting in June and will run until July.

The What: This website provides information on how to get involved in changing your life for the better, living younger and dying older, as Dr. Hans Diehl mentions in the website, by going through a complete health improvement program. The program helps one incorporate more of the healthier foods into ones life but also talks about exercise, sleep, moods, spiritual living and more, to either prevent or reverse certain diseases like diabetes and heart disease for example also earning it the title coronary health improvement project.

The Where: There are 52 scientific articles on the website itself and around a dozen professionals at the tips of ones finger. These are medical professionals that have done their research and not only that, have put it into practice and the website shows testimonies from people who have gone through the program(s).

The Why: This website was mostly created for individuals that are really looking for a change in their lifestyle by offering programs to doctors, teachers and every day people like you and me. I know that they are partnering with schools and have a partnership with Lee Health and are improving things here locally.

I would rate this website an 8. I do like how simple it is and straight to the point but I think more information on the programs and other advice might be better for visiting personnel.

health.com/nutrition

https://www.health.com/nutrition

This website looked more of like an informative type of website on what is going on in the world based on nutrition and what is popular now, like hummus, and such. The format was just lots of different articles on different topics.

The Who: This website is incorporated by the Meredith Health Group copyright 2019 by Meredith Corporation. This website seems to me more like a magazine type of website with lots of different articles on different topics.

The When: Copyright 2019 and seems up to date based on the titles of the articles, for instance one was about Megan Markle and Prince Harry wanting to raise their new born son vegan.

The What: If you want entertaining news on nutrition and see what is popular and what celebrities are doing, this website would be for you. I did see one article so far by a doctor but that was paid content, which to me I believe it is other resources or websites paying to have their information displayed in this website and by the looks of it when I followed the link they are offering a subscription type of service for information as well.

The Where: The articles seem to be coming from editors that look into the subject of nutrition and health but more on the trendy end and what is going on in Hollywood. There were few articles by actual credentialed doctors.

The Why: This seemed, and probably is I am not fully aware, like a magazine as it had an option to subscribe to it which I believe the subscription gives you recipes and probably more information on nutrition and what is trendy at the moment.

I would rate this website a 3. I do not think I would trust information coming from Hollywood and what celebrities are doing since that is not really where my interest lies and there was just not a lot by real doctors or anyone I would trust listening to.

Familydoctor.org

https://familydoctor.org/

This website seemed more medically intuitive and like it had real information that was more credible than the last. They had a topic of the month and then different links and articles to provide more insight and resources.

The Who: The website right away lists that it is “Trusted medical advice from the American Academy of Family Physicians” which tells me it is run by that group and the information must come from the physicians in the academy or at least most of it.

The When: Showed 2019 at the bottom of the website and a lot of the articles were published recently if not in 2018 and they have monthly up dates so I will say it is quite up to date.

The What: Lots of information on different topics that are related to health in the broader spectrum and nutrition is offered in this website. Lots of advice and resources and links to other websites depending on what one is looking for is also provided telling me this is more of an informative type of website.

The Where: The articles are written by physicians and they provided their resources on where they got their information as well.

The Why: This website was provided to give trusted information to the public by real doctors. There is just loads of information and resources in this one website and since it is powered by the AAFP it is said to be trusted and reliable.

I would rate this website a 9. I like the reliability of real doctors writing the information. It is overwhelming of how much information there is but they did a good job breaking everything down into sections.

Nutrition experts in the media:

Dr. Hans Diehl, DrHSC, MPH

I chose this doctor and nutrition expert because I have actually met this person and seen them talk live and seen the outcome of their work right in front of my eyes. I first heard about the program he leads and works with maybe 2 or 3 years ago and have known about this doctor for a year. I believe he has come here locally to VegFest, the one last year. Dr. Hans Diehl has been chosen as one of the U.S. 20 superheroes when it comes to health. He is a best selling author, researcher, speaker and clinical professor of preventative medicine at Loma Linda University in California. He has worked for more than 25 years in leadership in the emerging field of lifestyle medicine as an epidemiologist and has helped more than 50,000 people improve their lifestyles when it came to health and nutrition. He has also written over 8 books on the subject and today works with CHIP, coronary health improvement project and because of those accomplishments and his expertise I do find him reliable.

https://www.drmcdougall.com/health/education/videos/advanced-study-weekend-experts/dr-hans-diehl/

Christy Brissette, MS, RD

I came across Christy Brissette while researching for this assignment as I am not familiar with other nutritional experts that are in the media besides Dr. Hans Diehl and Dr. Darren Morton, but he is from Australia so I did not know him, and the other experts I know, while they are locally known by some are not widely known by the media. Brissette is an award winning registered dietician and nutrition and food communications expert considered one of the U.S’s leading nutrition experts. She is president of 80twentynutrition, a Chicago-based nutrition and food consulting company where she gives counsel on how to manage weight and how to eat when one has diabetes for instance. She contributes to many monthly columns with recipes and information to debunk this “dieting” trend and the publics confusion on food and how it can help us. Since she is not a doctor and I am not sure if her information is really medically based or just her opinion I will not deem her reliable enough for me. I would also like to see more accomplishments in real lives and not just media awareness.

A brief description of the site and the kind of information it provides. Your detailed analysis of reliability, using the “W” questions.

Mayo Clinic is a research center that provides a variety of articles pertaining to different types of diseases that affects one’s health. It offers a variety of articles pertaining to the pathophysiology of a disease and condition of a person, where it may originate and treatments. It gives a diagnosis based off what a person decides to click on from there it leads the person to a series of possible diagnoses.

The grade you gave it and the reasons for assigning this grade.

This website is 10/10, its articles on diseases are organized in alphabetical orders and provides signs & symptoms based on a disease. The website has its own search engine, including a link that will a person to make an appointment with the clinic. Mayo Clinic provides a “symptom checker,” which allows a person to search what they possibly might have. It gives an idea to the person whether to get checked out by a medical professional.

3. Medical News Today: What are the benefits of eating healthy?

https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/322268.php

A brief description of the site and the kind of information it provides. Your detailed analysis of reliability, using the “W” questions.

Medical News Today is an article discussing the reasons to why healthy eating is beneficial to a person. It lists helpful benefits of maintaining a healthy diet along with evidence that sustains to why eating healthy lowers the risks of cancer, heart disease and obesity to name a few. The article discusses that eating a variety of fruit and vegetables provide better nutrients than eating a high amount of sugar, salt and fast food.

The grade you gave it and the reasons for assigning this grade.

I would give this article 7/10. It gives multiple reasons on the benefits of eating healthy, but it could inquire more in-depth reasoning to each subject. The article is informative by giving some reasons to each subject that was being covered. It provided enough information to understand that the article is discussing the importance of healthy eating and which vegetables/fruits are most beneficial to the body.

PART 2

Jillian Michaels. I recalled that she was a well-known trainer for the television series, Biggest Loser. Jillian Michaels is a renown fitness trainer that has been on several talk shows about weight loss and has spoken about the importance of eating healthy and exercising to maintain a healthy weight. I chose Jillian Michaels, due to that she knows what she is talking about, she has an extensive knowledge on wellness and health since she herself was once obese growing up. She is a personal trainer with certificates from The Aerobics and Fitness Association of America (AFAA) and National Exercise & Sports Trainers Association (NESTA) with a Kettlebell Concepts certification. She has sold numerous best-selling books, stars in her own talk show, podcast, has been a co-host for The Doctors, and made several appearances on different talk shows as well. Jillian currently works as a personal trainer, as well as making workout videos.

I would consider Jillian as a reliable nutrition expert. She has dedicated her time to improve herself and others when it comes to weight loss journeys. She has a written books that revolve around eating healthy and improving your metabolism. She advocates for fitness, whether it is at home or at the gym.

“Jillian Michaels Biography.” Edited by TheFamousPeople.com, TheFamousPeople.com, 27 Apr. 2018, https://www.thefamouspeople.com/profiles/jillian-michaels-33465.php.

Alfredo Bowman, also known as Dr. Sebi. I chose Dr. Sebi since he made headlines after the death of Nipsey, the rapper. Dr. Sebi is an herbalist that believes in alkaline plant food to fuel the body by reducing and up to eliminating the acidic intake of certain foods. His method pertains to eliminating acidic food such as: fast food, meat, poultry and anything that affects the body negatively. Dr. Sebi believes that eating alkaline food is a way of life, not just a diet (1). Dr. Sebi is self-educated, he is a pathologist, herbalist, biochemist and naturalist (2). He is renowned for his methodology of natural veganism that involves intercellular cleansing by incorporating fruit and vegetables that are most alkaline.

I wouldn’t consider the articles as a reliable source. After in depth reading and comparing articles, the both websites advertise products by Dr. Sebi or other nutritionists. The websites do provide reasonable information on healthy eating and providing proper nutrients to the body. Although, Nipsey swears by Dr. Sebi’s ideology, Dr. Sebi’s only form of knowledge is from self-awareness and deep studying of each subject.

You will have to read and evaluate the work of your two classmates and write feedback. While you will formally assign a ‘grade’, the most important part is your comments. Students benefit from peer reviews because they get feedback from several fellow students and because they read other students’ submissions and think about both the work they evaluate and their own work.

You will have to evaluate submissions of your two peers, fill out the Rubric, AND write your feedback in the Comments box.

1. Open the assigned submission (one at the time).

2. Read and evaluate the work.

3. Evaluate based on the rubic below fill out each one and  Assign the numbers.  If you do not give full credit for an item explain your reason in the ‘Ratings’ area of the rubric. You can share your thoughts even if you gave the highest score. Write comments (when appropriate) – IN YOUR OWN WORDS. Please do NOT copy and paste text from the rubric

4. Write your feedback. Reflect on the submission, explain what you liked or did not like and why. Discuss how the submission could be improved. Explain the reason for your grade.
The feedback does not have to be long. It should be sufficient for the author to understand what you think about their work and provide suggestions for improvement (if any). Please exercise constructive criticism and try to be positive. Think what kind of feedback YOU would like to receive. Any thoughts about the submission are welcome.
