1. Introduction

Pipes and tubing are used to transport hydrocarbon from bottom hole to the surface,

from well site to facilities, from harbor to plants, and from country to country. They

are installed in the deep subsurface at temperatures exceeding 100oC to conduct

hydrocarbon to the much cooler surface environment (below 40oC). They run on the

deep sea oor at 4

oC and across the vast frozen arctic elds in the United States,

Canada, Russia, and other Northern countries where the winter temperature drops

to below -30oC.

Para n wax is a component of the crude oil. It precipitates when temperature drops

below the wax appearance temperature (usually noted WAT) which is usually 40 –

50oC or 104 – 122oF. As the pipelines cross the cold environments, the oil inside my

drop below the WAT and have a wax deposition. If much wax is present, the pipeline

ow can be reduced or even blocked, as shown in Fig. 1.
