Purpose:

The purpose of this series of assignments is to provide a structured approach for you to track and report your nutrition intake during five days and relate your experiences to course readings.

This last part of the assignment is designed for you to analyze your diet, connect the information you’ve gathered to the knowledge you gained in this course and, lastly, to get you thinking about your diet and possible changes you could introduce in order to improve it.

Tasks:

Write a paper in question/answer format. Write the questions in bold and your answers in normal font. The paper will compare averages for your 5-day nutrient reports with Nutritional Goals for your Age-Sex Group Based on Dietary Reference Intakes & Dietary Guidelines Recommendations – use p. 97-98 of the 2015-2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans (Links to an external site.) or access the table directly. (Links to an external site.)In your paper you must make sure you use specific numbers and comparable units (mg, g or any other relevant unit) while answering the following questions:

  1. On average, were you above or below or just at your recommended nutritional goals (Links to an external site.) for protein intake? Carbohydrate intake? If so, by how much? How specifically might you alter your diet to bring these numbers closer to your recommended intake levels for both protein and carbohydrates from your personal profile? If your protein or carbohydrate intakes followed the recommendations, write about what you believe contributed to this.
  2. What was your average intake for fat? Saturated fat? How do they compare to your recommended nutritional goals (Links to an external site.)? How specifically might you alter your diet to bring these numbers closer to your recommended nutritional goals? If your fat and saturated fat intakes followed the recommendations, write about what you believe contributed to this.
  3. Discuss your results for each of these 4 minerals: Sodium, Potassium, Calcium and Iron. Compare your numbers with recommended intakes (Links to an external site.). What specific changes would you introduce into your diet to improve those numbers? If your intakes followed the recommendations, write about what you believe contributed to this.
  4. Compare your average intake of vitamins A & C with recommended numbers (Links to an external site.). What specific changes would you introduce into your diet to improve those numbers? If your intakes followed the recommendations, write about what you believe contributed to this.
  5. Check out the 5 guidelines that encourage healthy eating patterns on p. 17-19 of the 2015-2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans (Links to an external site.). What specific modifications would you have to make to your diet to more closely meet these guidelines?

Here is an example (Links to an external site.) of a well written paragraph that analyzes hypothetical fat intakes.
