Activity Name: Density Column

Learning Domain: social, practical, physical, judgmental/cognitive and discernment skills development

Overview & Purpose

Children will learn to identify different fluids and classify them according to the density. They can also form color pattern through the same if the fluids are colored.

It facilitates observation skills, step up their judgment and ration, and interact practically with the real matter around them.

Education Standards Addressed

The study of physical science entails planning and utilizing the available materials (fluids) outside the classroom to exercise the theories about density. This includes identifying and collecting different fluids, testing their densities and making correct decisions while addressing the major concept of physics.

Students at pre-school stage like kindergarten and nursery mostly learn through observation. To assist them better understand the physics of matter, they need to observe and be involved in practically testing them. Through this they develop cognitive and reason capabilities

Objectives:

– uniform measurement gadget like volumetric flask

– stick for stirring

-long uniform tube or glass(transparent)

– different coloring

Content:

· The child first writes/ predict the density of the fluids.

· They then test to see the practical reality.

· They use the fluids to form colored patterns through density

-provide the kids with the different fluids/liquids

– let them identify the liquids while guiding them

– let them lift equal liquids and classify them according to weight

– color the fluids

– allow them the mix the liquids, stir and see if they mix.

-Demonstrate how to put them in the uniform tube or glass

-guide them how to decide which is heavier

– let them try out and even make patterns like rainbow.

Volume & density changes

-Allow the children to use different volumes of the fluid and see what would happen to density. Explain why to them

-Put the liquids out to warm, or warm them and repeat the test. Ask them to tell why and then explain.

-You can also allow the liquid to flow and have the kids relate density to flow rate.

Additional notes:

· Teach the children more about density to mass and volume.

· Relate the density to flow.

· Explain real life situation where density applies like putting off a fire on paraffin with water is impassible.
