For this week’s forum, we are discussing three steps that we feel are most important when guiding a child’s behavior. I can honestly say, the very first behavior that spoke to me, was their first step “Arrange and Modify the Environment”. This step emphasizes a well-arranged environment helping children to work independently. I think I am biased to this step, because it fits my persona and how I work better in a neat and organized environment, but I think routine is HIGHLY important for children and their development. I’ve found in my own personal experience, that when me and my children stick to our routine, they do better in school, they’re less irritable, and they can better deal when things get a little out of order. Secondly, I think “Model Appropriate Behavior” is one of the most important steps; children are sponges, they soak up all the behaviors around them, good and bad. Whether it is at home, at school, on tv children mimic the behaviors around them, and I think it’s important for the adults to hold themselves accountable to ensure the success of our children developing into young adults and adults. Thirdly, I think “Know and Use Developmentally Appropriate Practice”, I learned this step is the most important, in dealing with my own children. My children are one year apart, but miles apart developmentally. When they were babies and developing, my daughter was walking and running around by 9-10 months, whereas my son, didn’t start crawling until after 1 year; however, verbally, my daughter didn’t start talking until almost 2 and needed speech therapy until 3, and my son was speaking in full sentences by 1 year and a half. Understanding the capabilities of each individual child, will help to better develop them in their formative years.

This weeks lesson was very enlightening. Having worked in the health field for many years, the ten steps to guiding behavior is something that I have certainly practiced. When working with young children, you have to understand that each child has a different personality. Which means each child is different. One of my philosophies has always been to get to know each child individually when you are the educator or childcare provider. The three out of ten steps of behavior that stood for most importance to me was 5). Know and Use Developmentally Appropriate Practice. This means to not expect too much or too little from a child. Expect what he/she is capable of doing. This makes since, I feel as if you should allow a child to be themselves. Allow them to sore in their own light. I also liked 8). Empower Children, this means to give the child responsibility. Give children choices, a sense of responsibility. Help them to succeed. I stand by this whole heartily. I believe children should have choices. When you give them a choice or a sense of responsibility, they get a feel of independence. It gives them self-confidence. In turn they want to try new things. Last but not least, I love 10). Develop a partnership with parents and others. This means to work closely and collaboratively with the parents. Who better then the child’s parents can give you the most insight into a child’s behavior. Nobody knows a child better then their own parent. I believe in working closely with the families and setting reasonable goals for the child. Using these guides to behavior will help run the classroom with ease.
