hcs455 discussion 15

1. The Flint water crisis in the state of Michigan is used as an example to promote health. The crisis shows the impact of budget and funding on population health. In late April 2014, the city of Flint switched from purchasing treated water from Detroit city to treated water from Flint River which is known with its corrosive nature. The move was in effort to save about $5 million over less than two years. This change introduced a more corrosive water source into an aging water system without adequate corrosion control. Dr. Hanna-Attisha released a study in September 2015 (Haana-Attisha, 2016) indicating that the lead level was doubled 2.4% to 4.9% (P < .05) in the serum of children after water source change particularly in socioeconomically disadvantaged neighborhoods. The results were not taken seriously by the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality and now there are about 6,000 and 12,000 residents had severely high levels of lead in the blood and experienced a range of serious health problems.

2.”Earth’s human population more than doubled between 1960 and 2001. Consumption, increased poverty, declining resources, and environmental damage create global problems that threaten human health and welfare in all nations. The human population has been allowed and encouraged to over consume, use and abuse our natural resources to a point where society at large is at an epic crossroads. In other words, as a global population, we have not only become unsustainable, but are knocking on the door to our own extinction.”

3.The large aging population does pose a challenge for medicare and it’s funding. There is a strong need for health care professionals to take care of this aging population that is living longer. Some aging Americans are still working to either have some extra income or to just interact with the community on the daily basis. It’s been said that Medicare and Medicaid need an over haul put how? Medicare and Medicaid are programs that have been abused. We federal laws such as the Anti-kickback and false claims act. We are stuck between a moral and ethical decision. I feel as though there has to be some type of negotiations between the private sector and public sector when it comes to costs of health care services. Parents should not have to choose between caring for their parents and caring for their children.
