Tracking Plate Movement

Goal:  The learner will build an understanding of lithospheric materials, tectonic processes, and the human environmental impacts of natural and human-induced changes in the lithosphere.

Background:

Scientists have substantial evidence to support the idea that the Earth’s crust is divided into numerous plates, which are constantly moving or floating on a river of molten magma.

Geologists and Seismologists monitor plate movement by using numerous technological advancements.  Some of the tools used by these scientists are:

GPS (Global Positioning Systems) and SLR (Satellite Laser Ranging).

Please watch the following video to learn more about how GPS works and some of the uses:

Navigation Global Uses

Assignment:

· You are to research GPS and SLR as they apply to mapping the Earth’s surface.

Use Microsoft Word or Google Presentations document to complete the following project:

· Write a brief (2-3 paragraphs) summary of how these devices help measure and record plate movement.  You can also include other uses for GPS and SLR.

· Insert several photographs (1-3) which help to explain how GPS and SLR work.

· Place captions (using a text box) with each photograph for explanation.

· Be sure to include a bibliography (including references used for information, pictures, and drawings).
