BACKGROUND
India graduated from the University of Bristol in 2019 with a First-Class Honours degree in English Literature. In her final year, she achieved a score above 90% in her Dissertation and was offered guidance in extending her assignment into a longer piece for academic publishing. Since graduating, India has pursued a career in writing for theatre, and has recently been accepted on a competitive MA course at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School for Dramatic Writing. Having just finished writing a script for audio drama; she is now moving on to her final project, a full-length stage play, which will be performed on the Bristol Old Vic stage this coming summer.
India’s degree has taught her a great deal about writing style and how to write confidently and concisely. She was the Arts Editor for the Epigram Newspaper while studying in Bristol, and a regular columnist for the Bristol Based magazine Intermission. Since moving back to London, she has worked as a freelance editor for both fiction and non-fiction writing.
India set up her own theatre company called The Factory Theatre Workshop. This new-writing theatre company prioritises the development and representation of authentic, female narratives on stage through experimentation and workshopping, and she has run a number of community youth-group theatre classes, and writing workshops.
India’s passion for all aspects of English Literature means that she is well-read and can offer guidance on a wide range of work, spanning drama, prose and poetry.
TEACHING EXPERIENCE AND APPROACH
India is an extremely positive and motivated individual and brings this mindset to all of her sessions. Her background in theatre and performance means that she is a friendly and familiar tutor and recognises that a positive working environment engenders the best results. She prides herself on an ability to pioneer transferable skills that a student can carry with them throughout their academic careers.
A highly experienced tutor in English Literature, English Language, creative writing, Drama and Theatre Studies and History, over the last six years India has tutored over 100 students, from primary school age up to 50+ with high success rates and universally positive reviews. She has also offered advice for students applying for places at top Russel Group Universities. These tutees have been successful in securing places at Bristol, Edinburgh, Manchester and Durham. India has also helped students in their interview and exam preparations for top London Grammar schools, with full success across the board, and has experience in teaching students with OCD, and ADHD.
India has assisted on an incentive entitled ‘The Schools Programme’ which offers intensive tutoring for students who are from disadvantaged backgrounds and have found themselves at failing schools. Confronted by students who were uninterested in learning or aspiring to the grades they were capable of achieving, India garnered the skills necessary to encourage and motivate children who were the most unwilling to cooperate.
Regardless of ability, or level, accepting help from a tutor can sometimes be a challenging feat on its own. For this reason, India creates an atmosphere that facilitates an open dialogue between herself and students. She is a firm believer in structure, and after an initial diagnostic meeting to discuss the student’s strengths, weaknesses, and ultimate goals regarding grades, constructs a lesson timetable with the student, so that both have an understanding of how to progress can be tracked.
WHY TUTORING?
I gain a great degree of pleasure from tutoring and see the student-teacher relationship as one that requires balance. I learn as much from a student as they learn from me and am consistently grateful for the results we achieve together and the progress I’m lucky enough to see all of my tutees make.
Some of my favourite books at the moment include On Earth We are Briefly Gorgeous by Ocean Vuong, Such a Fun Age by Kiley Reid, Three Women by Lisa Taddeo and All That Man Is by David Szalay.
