He also holds an integrated Masters in Physics and Philosophy from King’s College London, where he graduated with first class honours and was awarded the Nikon Prize for my project in Physics. As part of his degree Sam spent a year abroad in Singapore studying a range of subjects from Hindi and Indian History to Martial Arts and Japanese Philosophy. He has a very broad range of interests and has studied widely.
Outside of academia Sam is a semi-professional singer and classically trained pianist. He is a keen cyclist and reads widely, both fiction and non-fiction. Sam loves to cook and is learning French.
TEACHING EXPERIENCE AND APPROACH
Sam believes that having studied Philosophy along with Science has allowed him both a deeper understanding of the subject, but also of the reasons students struggle with certain concepts and how to approach these difficult concepts from different angles to build up a firmer grounding in the subject.
Sam began tutoring as a teenager and has tutored individuals and small groups in Maths, Physics, Philosophy and Science at GCSE. While the subjects at A-level are sometimes more conceptually interesting, he finds strengthening the foundations earlier on in the progression very rewarding as this is what makes later, further study possible, and hopefully more interesting!
‘I love to read, both fiction and non-fiction in Philosophy, Economics, Political Theory and History. I recently started Guns, Germs and Steel by Jared Diamond and am also making my way through the works of Ursula K. Le Guin; I’m currently reading Rocannon’s World’
