Shreyas https://expert-tuition.co.uk/tutors/shreyas/ Fri, 08 Sep 2023 16:00:17 +0000 https://expert-tuition.co.uk/?post_type=tutors&p=30242 BACKGROUND

Shreyas is currently attending the University of Warwick, studying for his BSc in Philosophy, Politics and Economics and has completed internships at Barclays and BNP Paribas. He achieved A* in all his subjects at A Level (Economics, Mathematics, English Literature).

Outside of tutoring Shreyas enjoys literature, practices yoga and plays cricket for his local club. He also contributes to a student-led economics blog and is a Grade 8 public speaker.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE AND APPROACH

Shreyas has over three years of tutoring experience. Starting in his local area, he taught a handful of pupils on a weekly basis during his own 6th form studies – their results were excellent with all GCSE students achieving grades 7-9. He has worked as an online tutor ever since, gaining a following for Economics. He has tutored multiple students to A*s and a recent pupil went from a C to an A in Economics after 3 months of lessons.

As a student himself, Shreyas understands and empathises with the hurdles children are facing. His teaching style focuses on student engagement and develops skills that will assist them in examinations. Active recall plays an integral part and lessons feature frequent quizzes, whilst remaining light-hearted, to ensure students are digesting new information. Shreyas takes the time to understand each student’s unique needs and tailors his lessons accordingly, to have the most positive impact.

WHY TUTORING?

I find teaching a constant challenge that is as invigorating as it is rewarding, and nothing makes me happier than helping my students. I understand how difficult it can feel to be behind at school, but know that one-on-one guidance and support can really change that. Knowledge has little value if it is not shared, and I take great pride in being able to use my own learning to help those as I was once helped.

My favourite book is Kensuke’s Kingdom by Michael Morpurgo

Tristan https://expert-tuition.co.uk/tutors/tristan/ Wed, 06 Sep 2023 17:48:01 +0000 https://expert-tuition.co.uk/?post_type=tutors&p=30239 BACKGROUND

Educated at prestigious Alleyn’s School, Tristan went on to study Geography and English at Durham University where he achieved first-class honours in all 18 modules. He was awarded the vice-chancellor’s scholarship – the highest academic award at undergraduate level – based upon his impressive exam results.

Tristan is a full-time qualified teacher with a PGDE and QTS from University College London’s Institute of Education. In his spare time Tristan relaxes by running, reading and watching sport – any sport, but mostly cricket and football.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE AND APPROACH

Tristan knows how to teach. He has tutored dozens of students over the past 8 years (over 500 hours in total), receiving countless positive testimonials (see examples, below). As a trainee teacher, Tristan was nominated for the Transforming Lives Award (held across the 52 Harris Academies) based upon ‘the rigour of his lesson planning and positivity’. The nomination read: ‘Tristan really cares. He cares first and foremost about the students and is meticulous in his planning to ensure students’ progress’.

Tristan has a track record of getting students top GCSE geography grades. Tristan currently teachers at the world-famous Michaela School, as part of England’s best Humanities department as measured by progress 8 (the value-added metric). He has a track record of getting students the best GCSE grade in geography they are capable of, using his experience as a qualified GCSE examiner to get the most out of every child. Tristan’s latest year 11 class achieved exceptional results, with many students achieving grade 8 and 9s, up to two grades higher than their ‘target grade’.

Tristan’s teaching philosophy is simple. Sufficient grounding in the essentials enables students to feel confident and to understand concepts, case studies and writing in more depth. He believes that pupils feel successful when the know lots of stuff: the more they know, the more confident they feel! It is this virtuous circle that Tristan aims to get students feeling through his tutoring.

WHY TUTORING?

Geography is an inherently interesting subject and I want more pupils to learn about it and its potential. Above all, I enjoy motivating and engaging students.

My favourite authors are Bill Bryson, Theodore Dalrymple, Malcom Gladwell and Jonathan Haidt.

TESTIMONIALS

“Tristan has helped Zara cover the WJEC Geography syllabus for her upcoming GCSE exam. Zara joined her Geography GCSE class late (at the beginning of year 11) so he needed to cover the entire specification to prepare her successfully. Zara loves working with him and finds he explains things in a clear and concise way. Zara truly has enjoyed her lessons with Tristan so much so that she is now considering doing Geography for A level!”
Parent of Zara (aged 16)

“My son Graydon arrived from Canada recently where he studied a completely different curriculum. He had limited time to prepare for his common entrance exam to Winchester, and he found himself struggling in lessons at school as he had missed out on so much content. Tristan helped Graydon prepare for his Winchester entrance exam in May 2023 which he passed with flying colours. Tristan is now helping my 16 year old daughter prepare for her Geography A levels even though she hasn’t done the GCSE!”
Parent of Gradyon (aged 13)

“Tristan, thank you so so so much for your help tutoring me geography in year 11. I was lost at the start of the year. I’m delighted with my grade 7 (an A) which I simply could not have got anywhere near without your help. Thank you.”
Bayan (aged 17)

She studied Maths, Further Maths, Economics and Physics for A-Level and achieved her dream of a place at Cambridge, going on to graduate with top marks in Economics. Following positions as a trader at JP Morgan and at a leading consulting firm, she followed her passion and began tutoring. Outside of tutoring Samira is a kickboxer and qualified personal trainer, as well as being a Calm ambassador for mental health and a writer.

Her pupils have gained places at universities including Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial College and Columbia University, New York to study subjects as varied as Mathematics, Economics and Medicine. She specialises in Maths, Further Maths, Economics, Business Studies, entrance examinations and interview practices for Consulting Firms.

Samira’s teaching style varies depending on the student. She begins by getting to know them, how they learn (colours, by doing etc.), where their strengths are and what they need support with, working with them to devise a revision plan, then steadily working through it.

Samira has extensive experience with SEN students and offers mentoring and guidance to students through their university application, including advice on personal statements.

WHY TUTORING

I firmly believe that education should be accessible to all and that everyone has the ability to get to grips with a subject that intrigues them. I enjoy watching students grasp a concept they have previously struggled with – it’s a wonderful feeling! I was lucky enough to have had some incredible teachers who lit my passion for maths and economics which has opened so many doors for me post university and would like to pass on that love for the subjects to the next generation.

My favourite book – Currently (as it keeps changing!) my favourite books are Hello Beautiful by Ann Nepolitano and Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman

TESTIMONIALS

“Samira taught me in the months leading up to my economics A-Level and I honestly cannot recommend her enough! She gave me a deeper understanding of the course material and went above and beyond to mark any extra work I sent to her. Her thorough explanations and persistent encouragement to believe in myself definitely stood me in good stead for my exams, and I’m incredibly grateful for all that she taught me both about economics and building confidence!” Bella

“Samira is an amazing tutor and has helped me over the past couple of months with my A-Level exams. I honestly don’t think I could’ve sat those exams without her guidance and encouragement to go with my gut and that I knew more than I thought and I thank her so much for that!” Natalie

TEACHING EXPERIENCE & APPROACH
Megan has over 1,000 hours of teaching experience and is also a tutor of Medicine at Worcester College where she studies, specialising in infection and immunity for second year undergraduates. She has worked with students of all ages and internationally, including residential posts. All of Megan’s students have gone on to exceed their target exam scores, with many securing places at top schools and universities around the world.

With an appreciation of school years as a time that can be both exciting and daunting, Megan often finds that many of the problems students face in the classroom and exams fall down to a lack of confidence, and a large part of her tutoring process is aimed at building that confidence. She provides a nurturing and encouraging environment where no question is too silly, and no mistake is too great! Really getting to know her students allows her to create a personalised plan to not only ensure success, but also enjoyment along the way. Megan helps students to develop a toolkit of techniques and resources that apply not only to that subject or set of exams, but throughout their academic career.

WHY TUTORING?
I got into tutoring many years ago through my love of learning and wanting to pass this on to others. I am extremely passionate about my subjects, and enjoy the opportunity to impart this knowledge and encourage a student to find out what interests them. Getting to know students and helping them to achieve their goals is immensely rewarding.

My favourite book is The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho. This book was given to me as a child by my late cousin and no matter how many times I read it, I always come away with a different perspective.
